The Forest School Awards are an annual competition to encourage local schools, nurseries and youth organisations to visit and take on an ownership of their local Council Park.
Winners will identify a local Council Park that they are able to walk to. They will identify an area within the local Council Park that they will develop as their own Forest School site. Here they will undertake exciting and innovative activities to help them understand the importance of our natural environment and local heritage. Activities might include making a map of the Council Park using only natural resources, den building, using trees to help children understand maths and so on.
The teachers and youth leaders involved undertake a Forest School Leader qualification. This gives them the confidence to continue visiting the Council Park year after year and developing more exciting outdoor activities to replace classroom led lessons.
The Forest School Awards are funded by the participating Councils and managed by the Northern Ireland Forest School Association.
