Background: My husband Paul and i run little acorns voluntary. We opened it in July 2018. We have a daughter with autism and other complex needs and found it difficult to find a place that would cater for her needs, so in January 2018 i qualified in level 1 forest school and continued my studying with NIFSA to achieve my level 3. My husband is working towards level 2 & 3 in RHS horticulture. He is also studying social and therapeutic horticulture.
I myself have qualifications in nursery nursing, sensory processing disorder, autism and many more.
Forest School setting: Little acorns is not based in a `forest' we are based in a secure, fenced field due to our childrens needs. We have 30+children who attend weekly or fortnightly quarter of whom have additional or special needs. We are lucky our local Royal British Legion leased us the field and we use their toilet and kitchen facilities. We have huge support from the local community supplying us wood, netting, tools and much more. This year we secured funding from community fund Northern Ireland, this bought our polytunnel, classroom, gardening tools and much more. MOVING FORWARD We are fully booked for the next 12 months, but we at little acorns are continuing to support our children through hands on our door learning, growing their own products to eat or take home, developing friendships with all religions, children of all abilities and learning to respect each other and their environment their for we at little acorns believe by teaching this we are supporting their mental health and understanding for years to come.
