Background: Bocombra Primary and Nursery School aims to help pupils develop
the knowledge, skills and practical abilities they will need throughout their lives,
at work and play, in a fast changing world. We want to help pupils develop lively,
enquiring minds and an enthusiasm for learning and it is our belief that Forest
School is one of the best ways we can achieve this. We became involved with
NIFSA in 2018 when Mrs Warnock and Mrs Craig attended a Forest School
training session in Dungannon. They immediately caught the vision and ethos of
Forest School and decided to trial Forest School sessions with their own classes
Nursery and P5/6 classes. Although they began with the aim of completing 6
sessions as part of their work for their Level 3 Award, they soon recognised the
impact of this style of learning on the level of enthusiasm of the children and
carried out Forest School sessions on a weekly basis through the whole school
year. In August 2019, Mrs Warnock and Mrs Craig led whole staff training in
Forest School and we hope to see Forest School happening in every year group
throughout this year.
In September 2019, Mrs Warnock and Mrs Craig received their Level 3 Award in
Forest School Leadership and we became an official Forest School. Our plaque is
proudly displayed at the front of school!
Forest School setting: Our Forest School sessions take place on our school grounds, where we have extensive green spaces perfect for outdoor learning. Nursery pupils take part in activities in their outside play area which is a safe and secure environment for them to learn and explore in. Primary 1 pupils have a very well-equipped dedicated outdoor play area beside their playground. For all other year groups, there are various green spaces which are ideal for Forest School sessions. Each of the green spaces contain a wide range of trees and shrubs, providing ideal opportunities for connecting with nature, building dens and exploring our outdoor environment.
